About a year ago, I was contacted by one of the HGTV casting department agents. They occasionally email all the ASID interior designers in Jacksonville asking for candidates for renovations. They were looking for homeowners in the Jacksonville area that were desperate for a renovation and had already started the process. They were looking for odd floorplans and challenging spaces.
At the same time, my son and his family, who live about four blocks from the beach, had just bought the house they have been renting for 10 years and we’re planning to renovate the dysfunctional kitchen. So, obviously, I put their name in as a candidate for an HGTV Reno.
They were being interviewed along with numerous other homeowners for this particular renovation. After several conversations with the casting person and some preliminary firming of the house and the family… they were chosen for this slot.
The fact that we have hundreds of designers who are ASID members in Jacksonville, and the fact that there were numerous homeowners who were being considered, it seems pretty incredible that they were chosen for this particular Reno.
Marcus Lemonis, best-known for the Profit on MSNBC, was the most caring and generous host during the preliminary filming and demo. He was extremely sensitive to what they wanted and did not want in the planning stages. He also donated a lot of his own money to renovate the upstairs.
I cannot add any pictures of the renovation because of agreements made to not reveal anything until after the show airs Saturday night, April 8 at 10 PM. I am pretty sure the increase in value of the property after the reno will be record breaking compared to typical shows of this kind.
I was not the designer on this project, because Marcus Lemonis is the actual designer. He made all the ultimate choices and did an incredible and creative reno with very challenging limitations in the floorplan of this house built in the 70’s.
My son, Derek Harmon, is the pastor along with his wife, Beth, of Ocean City Church in Jacksonville Beach. www.oceancitychurch.org He has a very demanding schedule. They had to move out of the house for over six months because of some setbacks in permitting, and some additional challenges that you will see if you watch the program.
On the day of the reveal, I got to meet Nancy from Nancy Glass Productions. She came down from her studio In Pennsylvania to meet the family and see the results in person. I have always admired her. She is a frequent producer for unique HGTV specials and does a lot of groundbreaking programming.
Turn into the show Saturday evening, the day before Easter, at 10 PM on HGTV. The show is called the Renovator and I am sure it’s going to be an incredible hit because Marcus Lemonis is such a creative and generous person.
